How Long Should a Pool Pump Run?

A useful tool in a pool owner's weaponry is knowing the length of time to run their pool pump. Pool pumps have multiple vital functions. The pool filtration system is the foundation for cleaning pollutants out of the water. Running the pool filter can also filtrate the pool water rigorously with the chemicals it needs to maintain the pH balance. However, continually running your pool's filtration system becomes inefficient. It squanders energy and will wear down the pump and its parts prematurely. Nevertheless, pool filtration systems are very effective in keeping your pool clean.

IS MY TIME USING A SKIMMING NET OVER?

Negative. You still need to skim leaves and other debris off the pool's surface to help the filter do its job. It can become easily overwhelmed by contaminants. Organic materials quickly dissolve, causing the filter to work even harder after skimming with the net. At the same time, skimming is far superior to allowing the filter to do all the work. This is particularly true during the summer when the pool is being used, and contaminants are visible to the naked eye.

DETERMINING THE POOL VOLUME

The volume of the pool plays a significant role in determining how long to run the pool pump. In an earlier blog, we showed how to calculate the volume of your swimming pool using its shape and depth. That blog can be found here. It's a good idea to use it to figure out the volume of your pool.

SPEED OF THE PUMP

The second part of the equation is the speed set on your pump. The pump speed regulates the rate of pool water filtration. This speed can be slightly problematic because a newer pump has dual or variable speed, which means the speed the water is pumped also dictates the speed of your water filtration. This makes it imperative that you know the speed of the filtration rate. Lower speeds use less energy.

As soon as you know your pool's volume and filtration rate, you can divide the pool volume by the filtration rate to determine the number of hours you will need to filter all the water in your pool. The speed will change if you change it on the variable pump.

FOR HOW LONG?

When choosing the run time length, it is strongly suggested that you let it circulate the pool a minimum of two times for maximum benefit. Many factors decide the time necessary to run a pool pump, such as the weather, the amount of swimming activity, and the amount of detritus built up in the pool. Most experts agree that you should run the pool pump every day during hot weather.
