Six Pool Ownership Essentials
Owning a pool is a joy and responsibility. Since we deal with pools and pool owners on a regular basis, we are in a unique position to see the mistakes pool owners frequently make.
We’ve compiled a list of some of these to raise awareness of things the owner can do to avoid some basic errors associated with pool ownership.
Lock the gate
Even if the latch is high, don’t trust it! Easy access to a pool is an invitation for older children and vagrants to enjoy your pool when you’re away. Keep the gate locked at all times with a proper lock, not just a stick or carabiner clip. If someone sneaks into your pool and somehow comes to an ill-end, you are responsible if you didn’t exercise due diligence.
Watch the chemicals
Keeping the chemicals balanced is an easy chore to forget or neglect. Pools should be tested (minimally) once per week in the winter, and every other day or so in the summer. Testing is the easiest way to keep on top of what is happening with your pool: looking at the water is not. Applying chemicals to keep algae and minerals at bay and the pH in balance will keep the pool water in an optimal state.
Keep debris and critters out
That branch the monsoon blew in, and the baby rabbit in the skimmer are problems which need to be treated right away. In a future blog, we will talk about steps to take during animal removal.
Keep the water at the correct level
The water level of a pool should be between one-third to halfway up the pool skimmer opening for the average pool. If the pool isn’t equipped with an automatic fill, it’s even more important to be diligent about maintaining the water level. If the pool does have an automatic fill, it’s worthwhile to keep an eye on it, just in case the float becomes stuck.
Repairs
When repairs arise, it’s easy to overlook the long-term effect these have on your pool. Leaks, plastering, and even replacing missing tiles can cost a little money, but save a lot of money down the road if minor repairs are completed promptly.
Regular pool maintenance
Brushing, backwashing, vacuuming, skimming leaves, and keeping the baskets clean all contribute to a gloriously clean and safe pool. Conversely, not conducting these little maintenance chores will eventually lead to trouble. Be diligent, the same way people are careful about walking the dog or collecting the daily paper. If you can’t do it yourself, don’t feel bad. Many people are busy but want a well-maintained pool. In that case, a pool maintenance company might be a great idea!
