Understand Pool Filtration Systems
A home pool is delightful and much more personal than a public pool. But with this luxury comes extra responsibility. For a home pool to serve its purpose, it must be clean and safe, which is where a filtration system comes in.
This guide looks into different types of pool filters and how they work.
Types of pool filters
There are three categories of pool filters: cartridge, sand, and diatomaceous earth (DE). Each operates under a different mechanism, but they all do a solid job of trapping debris and keeping the water clear.
Cartridge filters
Cartridge filters trap debris with a paper-like cylinder. They're reasonably environmentally friendly because they don't need as much water for cleaning as other filters. Another benefit is that they can work for a pool of any size. These filter types are easy to maintain without backwashing. Backwashing involves inverting the water flow and flushing out the filter's dirt.
Sand filters
Water passes through a bed of sand that traps particles with these filter types. They're easy to use and last an exceptionally long time. However, they do need backwashing to clean the debris in the sand.
DE filters
DE filters are among the more unusual types, using a powder made from fossilized remains of diatoms to clean the water. They're the most potent pool water filters as they can trap the tiniest particles, much smaller than what sand or cartridge filters can handle. However, they aren't as affordable or common as the other types. Remember that, like sand filters, DE filters need backwashing to stay clean.
Taking care of pool filters
Pool filters keep the water clean and free from unwanted environmental intruders. Therefore, they need thorough care and attention. Clean them often, replace their media, check for leaks, and monitor the pump and filtering system's operation. If using cartridge filters, the cartridge needs periodic cleaning. They need a replacement once they're sufficiently worn out. Meanwhile, as mentioned, sand and DE filters require backwashing. Also, the sand and DE powder aren't permanent and need periodic replacement.
Picking a pool filter
Which filter is the best for a pool could depend on its size, how often the residents dip in it, and what they find the most useful. Cartridge filters are low maintenance and save water, so they're great for saving some money and being eco-friendly. Sand filters have been around for long and are easy to handle. DE filters are the best and most comprehensive filters.
